Sounds of Home:

Book One – Compositions

Sounds of Home: Book One – Compositions – A Collection of Compositions and Sonic Memories is the first volume in an ambitious project by South African pianist, composer, scholar and educator Dr Sibusiso Joseph Mashiloane. Published in 2026, the book gathers more than sixty original works and thoughtful arrangements that translate the rich sonic world of South African townships, traditional practices, church music, jazz and communal life into notated piano repertoire.

At its heart lies the concept of isigqi — an isiZulu term for the decisive, embodied downbeat and rhythmic energy that Mashiloane describes as the “sonic pulse of home.” Drawing on leg rattles (amafahlwane), dance gestures such as indlamu, call-and-response, and the relational philosophy of ubuntu, the music treats the piano not merely as a solo instrument but as a site where communal memory, movement and spiritual presence become audible.

The volume opens with dedications, a glossary of African-language musical and social terms, portraits of the people and places that shaped the composer (Bethal/eMzinoni, Bheki Mseleku, Brenda Fassie, Madala Kunene, Moses Molelekwa, Madosini, and many others), a foreword by Neil Gonsalves, and a preface that situates the work as both personal sonic memoir and pedagogical resource. Subsequent sections explain how to approach the scores with conviction rather than mechanical precision, outline a conceptual framework grounded in African philosophy and scholarship, and provide detailed annotations for each piece.

The compositions themselves range from tributes (“For Mom,” “Song for Bheki,” “Molelekwa Spirit,” “Madosini”) and reflections on historical moments (“1976,” “Freedom Day”) to intimate portraits of family and place (“eMrova,” “Ntate Mashiloane,” “uHubo”), spiritual offerings (“Umthandazo,” “Hymn for the Creator,” “Zimu”), and imaginative reworkings of jazz standards (All Blues, Naima, Yakhal’inkomo, Amazing Grace) through a South African rhythmic lens. Many pieces explicitly invite the imagined presence of dancers, singers, foot-stamps and leg rattles, reminding performers that the written notes are only a framework for living, relational sound.Intended for pianists, students, teachers, scholars and anyone seeking African-centred repertoire, Book One is both a practical performance resource and a profound statement about music as memory, belonging and community. A companion volume of theoretical analysis and pedagogy is planned.
