Izibongo is derived from what Mashiloane regards as the Bantu instructive verb bonga, which means give thanks. The ritual of bonga (give thanks) endorses a spirit of gratitude in the performative art form of expression that involves playing musical instruments, reciting poems, and acknowledging one’s forebears through deeds and surnames. This practice holds deep significance within local African teachings from ekhaya (home) and is regarded as compulsory to pay homage to gratitude.
