“Music is universal,” I quoted Jali Foday Musa Suso as saying when I posted a too-brief tribute to him yesterday. Nowhere can we see that more clearly than in the way cultural exchanges across all kinds of borders infuse the idioms and spirit of one music into another – never unchanged (because everybody brings themselves to what they play), but generating unique new sounds.
